APIs In The Late Afternoon

Quentin seized the opportunity to pounce on the monetization question and I stated my belief that the best way to monetize apis is to “send money with the api”. I talked everyone through my Business Model Jujutsu post and ended with this line from Paul Forster, CEO of Indeed:

We tried charging for our API without much success. Then we paid developers to use it and it took off.

It’s official: MySpace has closed on its acquisition of Imeem, the streaming music service. It is paying a fire sale price of $1 million, sources familiar with the situation tell me, and could pay up to $7 million to $9 million in earnouts for key employees, who will likely include CEO Dalton Caldwell.

The Mainstreaming of MapReduce: TDWI

Last September, a pair of analytic database specialists — Aster Data Systems Inc. and Greenplum Software Inc. — trumpeted the availability native MapReduce implementations on their DBMS platforms that, they promised, would significantly accelerate performance for customers in several vertical markets. Recently, several other analytic database firms — including Netezza Inc. and Teradata Corp. — have followed suit, promising to introduce native MapReduce implementations of their own.

These are heady times for MapReduce advocates.

When they are rolling through the streets in strollers, toddlers are usually the ones throwing temper tantrums. Now it’s their parents who are having the biggest fits. On Monday the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a stunning recall of some 1 million Maclaren strollers that were released nationwide from 1999 through November of this year. Maclaren, the 42-year-old British brand, is wildly popular among the young-urban-professional set. The strollers are light, compatible and upscale but not terribly expensive (the recalled models cost from $100 to $360)

Why Google Is Blowing $750 Million On AdMob (GOOG)

Google and AdMob were kind enough to chat with us for a few minutes about today’s deal.

After the conversation, we’re more comfortable that Google hasn’t gone stark-raving mad. In fact, we think it’s probably a smart bet.

Google Acquires AdMob, Mobile Display Ad Company

Google has acquired AdMob (www.admob.com), a popular mobile display ad company, for $750 million.

Google has already built their own platform for AdSense on Mobile devices, but this acquisition gives Google access to AdMob’s more than 15,000 mobile Web sites and applications.

The target market is the tech-savvy, early adopter young male in his 20s or 30s who cares more about functionality and productivity, and tends to eschew certain lifestyle brands that attract herds of followers.
